The other week I was searching for sushi restaurants in Suffolk County, Long Island. One restaurant after another had reviews that all sounded the same. The general consensus was that they all had good food, but over the years have raised prices and cut portions. None of them had rave reviews about service either. That's when I came across Takumi.

I read about the chef's experience and how it is a family run place with a great selection. With practically no reviews, I went out on a limb and had our friends meet us there. We were shocked when we pulled up to a tiny old strip of stores with Takumi smack in the middle. All of us got out of our cars, looked at each other and slowly  walked in, not knowing what to expect. It was rather small, but there was only one other table taken. We were immediately greeted by the hostess (who I believe is the owner's wife) and seated. We brought our 8-month old daughter and they accommodated us with a high chair.

Our waitress came over to take our drink orders, while a few members of our party asked the hostess a few questions about the menu. When we received our food, everyone was more than impressed. Throughout the night, we were constantly checked on to see if we needed anything else, and the hostess was extremely friendly, especially with our daughter! I took her out of the high chair and the hostess asked if she could hold her! I handed her over and she started showing her off to the chef and playing with her. The whole staff was so personable and it felt like we were a part of their family. They really took care of us.

The decor of the place is rather minimal, or should I say, simple. It isn't over the top flashy or trying to be a modern NYC-esque restaurant on Long Island. It fits the theme of exactly what the place is-a low key, authentic Japanese restaurant. Their selection ensures that there's something for everyone, even those who do not like sushi (like my wife), and the prices are what I'd call average-not expensive, but not cheap. The taste of everything, especially their sushi specials (which they have written on a board at the bar) has definitely set the bar very high for other sushi joints in the area. I have had the best sushi I've ever tasted at Takumi and I will most definitely be back.
