House Salad

Crawfish Stuffed Oysters

Grouper prepared with Feta Oreganata Crust

Cod, Blackened Preparation

We are always looking for a new great seafood restaurant to replace our old favorite, On the Waterfront in Patchogue, so we decided to try Rachel's Waterside Grill after seeing it was named Best of Long Island 2014 for Seafood, yet again. We made reservations for a Saturday night, so we had no wait despite the restaurant being very busy. It is a little tight when you walk in, and the hostess stand is a tiny thing pushed against a wall between the bar and dining room, so if you have to wait, you can probably do so at the bar or outside.

After we were seated, a bus person brought us water, and a few minutes later, our waitress said hello and that she would be with us shortly. It took her almost 15 minutes to come back, but it allowed us to really look over the menu, and there was bread on the table so we had something to munch on.

We did notice that we had two different menus. One had Cod under the fish selections, the other didn't. And under the preparations, one said the Fresh Herb Roasted was with a roasted red and yellow summer tomato relish, while the other menu said it was with a roasted red tomato and yellow pepper relish. We pointed it out to the waitress, not to be critical or anything, we were possibly interested in ordering it

We ended up ordering the Crawfish stuffed oysters, the Grouper, prepared with the Feta Oreganata Crust (seasoned bread crumbs and feta cheese with a lemon basil olive oil drizzle, served over spinach whipped potatoes), and the Cod, with the Blackened preparation (Louisiana rubbed and charred spicy crawfish and tomato creole cream over pecan scallion rice). Our waitress told me it was very spicy and made sure I liked spicy food before taking the order. The entrees came with a choice of soup or salad as well, so we ordered one of each.

The crawfish stuffed oysters came out shortly after, and they were so delicious! Decently sized and there were 4 of them. Almost with perfect timing, the soup and salad came out. The NE Clam Chowder tasted great but was mostly potato with very few pieces of seafood in it. The salad was delicious with mixed greens, diced beets and peaches, basil, goat cheese and candied walnuts. Earthy, sweet and savory, with a few perfect bites whenever you pick up a walnut.

Soon after the entrees came out. The portions were very large for both the fish filet and the side. Everything was perfectly cooked, and the flavor was not lacking in either the Feta Oreganata Crust or the Blackened crawfish tomato sauce. Yes, the Blackened Cod was spicy, but not overbearingly so. It's a Cajun dish, so just keep that in mind should you want to order it.

Even though we were full, everything was so great that we just had to try dessert. We decided on the Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart, which appeared small for two people when brought to the table, but proved otherwise because it was so rich. A chocolate tart shell was filled half way with hardened dark chocolate and half way with caramel, which was topped with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt. Every bite was just perfection.

The vibe of the place was laid back and casual. When packed, the place gets loud, but not enough to be an annoyance.  The prices were to be expected because of the location and we had a window seat so we were looking onto the water. Not a terrific view, but at least it's not a parking lot. The decor was simple and tasteful, and the cone-in-sphere lighting fixtures were modern, albeit several bulbs from each were out.

Besides a slight wait for our waitress to take our order, service was good the rest of the night, with glasses being refilled and being checked up on.

Overall, we found a seafood restaurant we look forward to returning to!
